ÑÇÉ«Ó°¿â's English program encourages creative and critical inquiry to examine how language and literature influence and shape our views of the world.

Study the Power of Language and Literature

ÑÇÉ«Ó°¿â’s English program will teach you to express yourself articulately and think critically, exploring diverse aesthetic, linguistic, and cultural traditions in global contexts of social justice.

Our program offers a comprehensive foundation in the study of literature, writing, and language, with a focus on:

  • Exploring a wide range of literature from different cultures and time periods, from Shakespeare to contemporary writers.
  • Developing your writing skills in a variety of genres, including essays, fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction.
  • Learning about the structure and function of language, as well as the ways in which language is used in different contexts

Graduates leave with a broad understanding of literary studies, writing studies, and linguistics, which prepares them for a variety of careers in and beyond the discipline. Alumnae have careers in education, writing, publishing, advertising, management, public relations, medicine, law, and more.

Distinguished St. Kate’s English alumnae include Kelly Barnhill ‘96, whose novel The Girl Who Drank the Moon won the Newbery Medal in 2017, and Anne McKeig ‘89, the first American Indian justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court.
